Know before you go

Calexico West is a busy downtown crossing into Mexicali. There is no Banjercito here, so use Calexico East for vehicle permits and for cancelling your TIP on the way back.

At the border

What's where?

Marker positions are approximate — confirm exact locations on the day.

Customs (Aduana)

Just after crossing, this building on the right handles both customs inspection and FMM/passport stamping.

Immigration (INM)

Located inside the same building as aduana on the right — process your FMM tourist permit here.

Money changer

Currency exchange booths near the historic Chinesca district, a short walk from the crossing.

Parking

Limited metered street parking near the aduana/INM building if you need to stop and process paperwork.

Driving the crossing

Step by step, southbound

1

Approach the Calexico West Port of Entry through downtown Calexico — this is the older, busier of the two Calexico-area crossings.

2

Cross into Mexicali through the vehicle checkpoint; watch for the red/green light customs system.

3

If you need an FMM, park near the aduana/INM building just past the border and process it at the INM window.

4

Note: Calexico West has no Banjercito — if you need a vehicle Temporary Import Permit (TIP), you'll need to use the Calexico East crossing instead.

5

Continue south into central Mexicali via Calzada López Mateos or Blvd. Benito Juárez.

Before you cross

Your US auto policy won’t cover you in Mexico

US, Canadian, and other foreign policies aren’t recognized in Mexico. Without coverage, even a minor accident can mean your vehicle is held and you’re detained until a valid policy is confirmed.

  • You must have cover to legally drive anywhere in Mexico
  • Liability or full coverage options available — valid instantly
  • Takes about 15 minutes to buy online, and is accepted at all border crossings and checkpoints
