Know before you go

Douglas is a quiet, roomy crossing into Agua Prieta with a 24-hour Banjercito, which makes it handy for early or late crossings.

At the border

What's where?

Marker positions are approximate — confirm exact locations on the day.

Customs (Aduana)

Mexican customs checkpoint inside the border facility (\'Garita Mexicana\') where vehicles are inspected or waved through.

Immigration (INM)

Immigration office co-located inside the Mexican border facility for FMM tourist permit stamping.

Banjercito (TIP)

24/7 vehicle-permit office located inside the same Garita Mexicana complex as customs and immigration — unlike some crossings, it\'s right at the border, not miles south.

Food

Sport’s Zone Beer & Grill located a short drive from the crossing in downtown Agua Prieta.

Driving the crossing

Step by step, southbound

1

From Douglas, AZ, follow AZ-80/Pan American Ave south to the Douglas Port of Entry.

2

Cross the border into Agua Prieta; the road continues as Calzada Panamericana. Watch for the semáforo — a red light triggers a secondary inspection.

3

If you need an FMM tourist permit or vehicle import permit (TIP), pull into the Banjercito/INM office located within the same border facility complex — no need to drive further into town.

4

Continue south on Mexico Highway 2 or toward your destination once documentation is complete.

Before you cross

Your US auto policy won’t cover you in Mexico

US, Canadian, and other foreign policies aren’t recognized in Mexico. Without coverage, even a minor accident can mean your vehicle is held and you’re detained until a valid policy is confirmed.

  • You must have cover to legally drive anywhere in Mexico
  • Liability or full coverage options available — valid instantly
  • Takes about 15 minutes to buy online, and is accepted at all border crossings and checkpoints
