Know before you go

DeConcini is the downtown Nogales crossing, closer to the city center but busier and tighter than the Mariposa crossing to the west. For vehicle permits and RVs, Mariposa is usually the easier option. The main concern here is the security situation in Nogales, Sonora, so cross during daylight.

At the border

What's where?

Marker positions are approximate — confirm exact locations on the day.

Customs (Aduana)

Mexican customs booth right after the crossing where you may be waved through or flagged for a secondary vehicle inspection.

Immigration (INM)

Immigration office near the port where you can get your FMM tourist permit stamped if not done online in advance.

Food

Taqueria Las Yaquis De Obregon is a small taco restaurant only a short walk from the border crossing, popular with day-trippers.

Driving the crossing

Step by step, southbound

1

From I-19 in Nogales, AZ, follow signs for the DeConcini Port of Entry and merge into the southbound vehicle lanes.

2

Cross the border; the road becomes Avenida Obregón. Watch for the semáforo (stoplight) — a red light means a secondary customs inspection.

3

If you need to complete your FMM tourist permit or vehicle import permit, follow signs south on Highway 15 to the Km 21 Banjercito/INM office rather than looking for it downtown.

4

Continue south on Mex-15 (the Nogales–Hermosillo highway) toward your destination once your paperwork is complete.

Your US auto policy won’t cover you in Mexico

US, Canadian, and other foreign policies aren’t recognized in Mexico. Without coverage, even a minor accident can mean your vehicle is held and you’re detained until a valid policy is confirmed.

  • You must have cover to legally drive anywhere in Mexico
  • Liability or full coverage options available — valid instantly
  • Takes about 15 minutes to buy online, and is accepted at all border crossings and checkpoints
