Know before you go

Brownsville Veterans International (Los Tomates) is the preferred RV crossing into Matamoros, open 24 hours with room to park. The Banjercito is on the left, and there is a toll on Route 83. Matamoros is in Tamaulipas, under a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory; a 2023 incident killed two American travelers downtown. Cross only in daylight and do not linger.

At the border

What's where?

Marker positions are approximate — confirm exact locations on the day.

Immigration (INM)

Mexican immigration office at the Los Tomates crossing complex for FMM tourist permit stamping.

Customs (Aduana)

Customs checkpoint with semáforo inspection just south of the bridge, part of the same border complex as immigration.

Driving the crossing

Step by step, southbound

1

Approach Veterans International Bridge at Los Tomates from Brownsville, TX via the I-69E/US 77/83 freeway, which terminates directly at the Brownsville–Veterans Port of Entry.

2

Pay the southbound toll and cross the Rio Grande on the elevated main lanes into Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

3

If traveling beyond the Free Zone or staying more than 7 days, follow signs to the INM/Aduana/Banjercito complex just south of the bridge to process your FMM and, if needed, vehicle permit.

4

Pass through the Aduana checkpoint and follow the semáforo light — green continues through, red routes you to secondary inspection.

5

Continue south onto Federal Highway 101/180 toward Matamoros city center or your onward destination.

Your US auto policy won’t cover you in Mexico

US, Canadian, and other foreign policies aren’t recognized in Mexico. Without coverage, even a minor accident can mean your vehicle is held and you’re detained until a valid policy is confirmed.

  • You must have cover to legally drive anywhere in Mexico
  • Liability or full coverage options available — valid instantly
  • Takes about 15 minutes to buy online, and is accepted at all border crossings and checkpoints
